Forests and trees should be emphasized in global food security and nutritional diversity, according to leading reports.
Forests, Trees and Landscapes for Food Safety and Nutrition: A Global Assessment Report was launched at the UN Forest Forum in New York.
Sixty of the world's leading scientists contribute to the report - some from the International Forest Research Center (CIFOR) - which is coordinated by the International Forest Research Organization (IUFRO).
The report examines the value of forests that provide food for almost one in six - nearly a billion - people in the world.
"Despite the impressive increase in productivity" the report says, "the evidence is strong that conventional farming strategies will fail to eradicate global hunger and malnutrition. (This report) provides comprehensive scientific evidence on how forests, trees and landscapes can - and should - become an integral part of the solution to this global problem.
The researchers wrote that the effectiveness of landscape management and improved forest landscape governance is important, in the fulfillment of environmental services for agricultural production, provides better and more balanced nutrition, and creates greater control over inputs, particularly during unproductive seasons, vulnerable periods or for the marginal society.
